The Maryville women’s basketball team twice scored late to force overtime and then double overtime but Kentucky Wesleyan escaped with a 97-91 win in Great Lakes Valley Conference play in Owensboro, Ky. The loss spoiled double-doubles by both
Abby Duethman and
Rita Flynn.
Brittnye McSparron forced overtime when she sank two pressure free throws with 1.6 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 74-74. The Saints rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second half to send the contest to an extra session.
Kayla Person scored on a reverse layup to give the Saints an early lead. After the Panthers tied the game, Duethman drained a 3-pointer for a 79-76 lead. The Panthers received two free throws, but Duethman answered with two from the free-throw line for a three-point Saints edge. KWC scored four straight points to take the 82-81 lead. The Saints had two shots to take the lead but both misfired and the Panthers sank one free throw for an 83-81 lead. With 2.7 seconds left in overtime, Duethman converted a layup to force another extra session.
After a defensive stop to open the second overtime session,
Kate Childs scored to give the Saints an 85-83 lead. KWC used a three-point play to take the lead, but McSparron answered to hand the Saints another lead 87-86. The Panthers retook the lead but missed the chance for a three-point play and settled for an 88-87 cushion. The Saints missed and the Panthers drilled a trey for a four-point advantage. Kayla Person scored as Maryville cut the deficit to 91-89 with two minutes to play. Kentucky Wesleyan scored in the final minute before McSparron nailed a long jumper to pull the Saints to 93-91 with 38 seconds left. However, the Panthers hit a bucket, and after a defensive stop, sealed the win with two free throws.
Duethman poured in 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pace the Saints. Flynn scored a career-high 15 points and hauled down 10 boards. Three other Saints reached double figures in scoring as McSparron finished with 20 points, while Person had 14 and
Brittany Fish added 10. The Panthers used the 3-point shot and nailed 13 treys in the game. Sisters Kourtney and Karly Rhodes led KWC with 22 and 21 points, respectively.
The Saints slide to 5-5 overall, 1-1 in the GLVC, while the Panthers improve their record to 5-3 overall, 1-0 in the league. Maryville is back in action Saturday, Jan. 5, at undefeated Southern Indiana.
