Saints Upset Bid at Unbeaten Southern Indiana Falls Short 69-63

Taking on undefeated Southern Indiana, the Maryville women’s basketball team took a three-point lead in the second half, but the Screaming Eagles rallied to stay unbeaten in a 69-63 win in Evanville, Ind.
 
The Saints found themselves down 10 points midway through the first half but rallied to get back into the game. Brittany Fish came off the bench and drained a 3-pointer to bring Maryville to 23-16. Shelby Miller followed with a trey, and Abby Duethman scored inside to pull the Saints to within two points at 23-21 with eight minutes left before intermission. Kate Childs converted two free throws as Maryville drew to 26-25 but the Screaming Eagles scored the last three points to take a 29-25 edge at halftime.
 
Rita Flynn and Brittnye McSparron scored early in the second half as the Saints finally forged a tie at 31-31. Southern Indiana responded by scoring seven straight points to rebuild its advantage. Still down 40-33, the Saints responded with an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the day 41-40. Duethman hit a 3-pointer to begin the run, and McSparron sank two charity tosses. Samantha Robison scored to tie the game, and McSparron hit one free throw to give Maryville a 41-40 lead at the 12:38 mark.
 
Southern Indiana tied the game at 42-all before Fish sank a 3-pointer to push the Saints ahead 45-42 midway though the second half. Kayla Person scored on a driving layup but USI tied the game 49-49 with 8:50 remaining in the game. Erica Lorton made two free throws to put the Saints ahead 51-49. Childs sank one free throw as Maryville took a three-point lead with eight minutes left to play. However, the Screaming Eagles went on an 8-0 run to take a 57-52 margin. Miller drained a long 3-pointer to bring the Saints to within two at the 4:01 mark. USI built its lead to six but McSparron cut the deficit in half with a trey with three minutes remaining. However, the Screaming Eagles kept the Saints at bay down the stretch.
 
Duethman finished with 12 points and nine rebounds to lead the Saints. Miller scored a team-high 11 points, and McSparron chipped in 10 points. Anna Hackert led Southern Indiana (10-0, 2-0 GLVC) with 20 points and 15 rebounds.
 
The Saints slip to 5-6 overall, 1-2 in the GLVC. Maryville is back in action at home Thursday, Jan. 10, when McKendree visits for a conference tilt.
