Missouri S&T Clips Volleyball Saints in Three Sets

Despite holding Missouri S&T to just a .172 hitting percentage, the Maryville volleyball team fell in three close sets in Rolla, Mo., Friday evening. The Miners won 25-24, 26-24, 25-19.

Tied at 17-17 in set one, Demi Maniaci pushed the Saints ahead with a kill, and Mikaela Lahm served an ace for a 19-17 lead. Later, the Saints went ahead 20-18 on a Grace Balcerak kill before the Miners tied the set at 21. Consecutive hitting errors gave Maryville a 23-21 lead but Missouri S&T scored the last four points to win the set.

The second set was tied at 22-22 before Balcerak and Laura Welling had a block for a one-point lead. The Miners scored two straight to reach set point, before Balcerak finished a pass for a tie at 24-all. However, Missouri S&T scored two straight to take a 2-0 lead.

Maryville trailed by nine points in the third set before making a big rally. Hana Michael's kill sparked a 5-0 run. After a Balcerak kill, the Miners committed an error, and Julia Greaves notched consecutive kills. The Saints got as close as 23-19, but the Miners held on for the win.

Maniaci paced the Saints (6-13 overall, 1-7 Great Lakes Valley Conference) with nine kills, while Lahm chipped in eight kills. Ali Lampen was outstanding defensively and recorded 28 digs. Krista Haslag topped Missouri S&T (9-8, 5-3 GLVC) with 10 kills.
