The Maryville volleyball squad took set two at Drury but the Panthers won the last two en route to a 3-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory Saturday afternoon in Springfield, Mo. Drury won by set scores of 25-21, 25-27, 25-12, 25-20.
With the first set tied at 7-7, the Saints scored four straight points to charge ahead.
Hana Michael began the run with a kill, and
Julia Greaves followed with another. After a Drury error,
Grace Balcerak pounded down a kill for an 11-7 Maryville lead. The Saints cushion still stood at 13-10 until the Panthers reeled off five straight points to edge ahead. The Saints got as close as 17-16 but could never retake the lead.
The Saints trailed 21-16 in set two before scoring four straight points as Drury hurt itself with miscues. Maryville was still down 23-20 until
Samantha Callahan notched a kill. After a Drury hitting error put another point on the board for the Saints,
Laura Welling and
Mikaela Lahm teamed up on a block. A Welling kill put the Saints ahead 24-23. Drury came back with two straight points for a 25-24 margin until Maryville scored three straight. Lahm and
Demi Maniaci had a block, and a Drury attacking error gave the Saints a set point. Maniaci pounded down a kill for a 27-25 win.
Drury held a narrow 7-6 lead in set three but took charge by scoring seven of the next eight points. The Saints pulled to with in 14-9 but the Panthers pulled away late. Drury took a narrow 8-6 lead in the fourth set but scored four straight points. A Callahan kill pulled the Saints to 12-7 but the Saints were unable to trim the deficit to less than four as the Panthers closed out the match.
Maniaci led the Saints (6-14 overall, 1-8 GLVC) with nine kills, while Michael added eight kills and 12 digs.
Ali Lampen came up with 24 digs. Kaleigh Cole topped Drury (9-10, 4-5 GLVC) with 18 kills.
