The Saints women's soccer team saw a late comeback attempt fall short in a 2-1 defeat at William Jewell Sunday afternoon in Liberty, Mo.

The Cardinals scored two goals less than six minutes apart to put the Saints in an early deficit. Sarah Franklin tallied just 12 minutes into the game for a 1-0 WJC lead. The Cardinals doubled their lead at the 17:55 mark when Jade Gifford struck for a score. Hana McGinis nearly got the Saints on the scoresheet but her shot was saved. In the final moments of the first half, Danielle Schmitz put a shot on goal but her attempted was stopped.

Amanda Wichens tested the William Jewell defense with a shot but the Saints were kept off the scoreboard. In the 76th minute, Maryville finally broke through. Wiechens tallied her fifth goal of the season when she took a pass from Shannon Foley and deposited the ball into the back of the WJC net. The Saints had a final chance to tie the game but a Jen Jung shot was high, and Maryville could not score on the ensuing corner kick as the Cardinals escaped.
