Saints Explode for Four Goals in Triumph Over Southern Indiana

Box Score The Maryville women's soccer team exploded for four goals in en route to a 4-1 triumph over Southern Indiana, the Saints first victory of the season. The four tallies are the most the Saints have scored since a 4-2 victory over Saint Joseph's Oct. 12, 2012.
 
The Saints jumped on top in the 12th minute when they battled for a ball in the penalty area, and USI was whistled for a foul. Amanda Wiechens calmly converted from the spot to give the Saints an early 1-0 lead. Shannon Foley doubled the Maryville lead as the Saints connected two long passes for a score. Sam Kruse hit a long pass, and Wiechens collected the ball and passed it over to Foley. She hit a hard low shot past the USI keeper for a 2-0 at the 15:06 mark.
 
The Saints continued their offensive outburst in the 22nd minute with their third score in a 10-minute stretch. Kruse restarted a ball near midfield and hit a long arcing pass. Jen Jung ran underneath the pass and headed the ball into the USI goal as the Saints roared to a 3-0 lead.
 
Southern Indiana looked for a goal to start a comeback, and the Screaming Eagles finally scored in the 78th minute of play. USI pressed forward to cut the gap even further, but the Saints struck on a counterattack. Jung had the ball on the Saints defensive end of the field and hit a hit pass over the top of the Southern Indiana defense.  Foley collected the ball, pushed the ball to the left, causing the USI goalie to tumble to the pitch, and Foley easily scored into the empty net to seal the win in the 85th minute of play. She had two goals on the day, while Wiechens and Jung both had a goal and an assist. Kruse notched two assists on the day.

The Saints improve to 1-11-1 overall, 1-9-1 in the GLVC, while the Screaming Eagles slip to 7-5-1, 5-5-1 in the conference. Maryville looks to make it two straight wins as it hosts Illinois Springfield Sunday afternoon.
