Pittsburg State Downs Saints in Volleyball

The Saints stepped out of Great Lakes Valley Conference play and challenged Pittsburg State but the Gorillas hit over .300 to post a 25-18, 25-21, 25-19 victory over the Saints at Moloney Arena.
 
Hana Michael gave the Saints the early lead in set one with the first two kills for Maryville. The Saints found themselves down 11-7 until Mikaela Lahm notched a kill. The Gorillas edged ahead with a 6-1 run. The Saints got a point on a PSU error, and Julia Greaves added a kill. Maryville made a late charge with four straight points to get to 22-17 but Pittsburg State held off the run.
 
Set two was close throughout saw six ties and two lead changes. The Saints were down 17-15 until consecutive kills by Michael and Demi Maniaci drew the set level. PSU answered with a kill but committed a service error, and Michael's service ace pushed the Saints ahead 19-18. The Gorillas scored four straight points to reclaim the lead. Maryville got as close as 23-21 on a Maniaci kill, but PSU tallied the last two points.
 
Maryville took an early set three lead and was up 4-3 after a PSU hitting error. The Gorillas took the lead on the basis of an 8-1 run. Greaves notched two kills in a row to pull the Saints back to 11-7 but PSU took control by scoring five of the next six points.
 
The Saints see their record move to 6-17, while Pittsburg State improves to 12-10. Michael narrowly missed a double-double with nine kills and nine digs, while Greaves and Maniaci both finished with eight kills. Ali Lampen tacked on 13 digs to lead the defensive efforts for Maryville. Madison Mosier led PSU with 15 kills while hitting .583 on the match.
 
The Saints next are in action at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament Oct. 25-26. Maryville will face four squads to be announced from the GLIAC with matches being held in Aurora, Ill.
