Box Score 2 On day one of the Mizuno GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Volleyball Tournament in Aurora, Ill., Maryville earned a split of two matches. The Saints began the day by rallying past Walsh 3-1 (22-25, 25-9, 25-18, 25-21) and closed out action with a narrow 3-1 loss to Lake Superior as the Lakers won 25-18, 12-25, 27-25, 25-20.
In the opener,
Mikaela Lahm recorded a season-high 18 kills and hit .424 to lead the Saints offense. After Walsh took the first set by hitting .348, the Saints dominated the second set. Maryville scored four of the first five points, and after a Walsh point, the Saints exploded on an 8-0 run to take command. Maryville did not let the lead drop under double digits to square up the match.
Maryville trailed 12-9 in set three before embarking on a scintillating 10-1 run to surge ahead.
Jordan McKinley started the run with a kill, and Lahm followed with a finish.
Samantha Callahan drilled in two straight points, and Walsh committed an error.
Hannah Seitter served an ace before Walsh finally scored one point. Lahm put down a pass from Seitter to start a 4-0 as the Saints cruised to the win.
Set four was tied at 19-19 before Walsh jumped ahead with two straight points. However, the Saints had the answer to finish out the match. McKinley had yet another kill that sparked the match-ending burst. Walsh committed three miscues, and Seitter tipped in a shot. At match point, Lahm hammered down a kill to cap the comeback for the Saints.
Hana Michael had a double-double with 10 kills and 13 digs, while
Ali Lampen came up with 31 digs.
In the final match of day one, Lake Superior took the first set before the Saints rallied in set two with two big runs. Tied 3-3, Maryville went on a quick 5-0 run to take the lead.
Grace Balcerak started the run with a kill. After a Lakers error,
Taryn Trubich had a kill and an ace before another Lakers miscue gave the Saints an 8-3 lead. Lake Superior slowly cut into the Maryville lead and got as close as 11-10 but Maryville reeled off an 8-0 burst to retake control and tie the match.
Set three was close and both teams used one big run apiece to set up late drama. Tied at 15-15, the Saints scored five straight points to take the advantage. The Lakers used a 5-1 burst to cut the gap to 23-22. A Balcerak kill pushed the Saints to set point, but Lake Superior scored two straight. A Lakers error gave Maryville another chance to take the set but Lake Superior tallied the final three points to win the set.
In the fourth set, the Lakers had five straight kills to assume a 13-7 lead. The Saints closed the gap with three consecutive points and pulled back to within three. Down six, Maryville made one more rush by scoring five of the next six points and trimmed the deficit to 22-20 on a block by Balcerak and McKinley. However, Lake Superior closed out the match with three straight points to win the match.
Hana Michael and
Mikaela Lahm finished with eight kills, and
Ali Lampen added 14 digs.
The Saints end the tournament with a match against Malone starting at 1 p.m.
