Playing in its final road game of the season, the Maryville women’s soccer team’s rally fell short in a 2-1 loss at McKendree Sunday afternoon.
The Saints carried the early play and almost struck first with two good scoring chances.
Shannon Foley had a shot blocked, and
Katy Rood missed high in the 14th minute of action. Two minutes later,
Jen Jung’s attempt also misfired. McKendree’s Cassie Kaiping had her initial shot saved by Saints keeper
Allie Wilcox but the follow up shot scored to put the Bearcats ahead at the 28:24 mark. The Saints had two more scoring chances but the first half came to a close with Maryville down 1-0.
McKendree doubled its lead four minutes after the break when Amy Cassiday converted a penalty kick for a 2-0 lead. The Saints answered less than two minutes later when Foley scored her sixth goal of the season. Searching for the equalizer,
Hana McGinis and
Katie Mertz both had shots stopped 10 minutes after intermission. Maryville kept the pressure on the Bearcats defense and had two chances in the waning minutes but McKendree held on for the victory.
The Saints welcome cross-town rival University of Missouri-St. Louis for the regular season finale Wednesday afternoon.
