Quincy Narrowly Escapes Volleyball Saints

Box Score The Saints volleyball program battled Quincy in every set but was just edged by the Hawks in three straight in Great Lakes Valley Conference play in Quincy, Ill. The Hawks narrowly downed the Saints 25-22, 25-23, 26-24. Laura Welling paced Maryville with 12 kills while hitting .310, and Ali Lampen finished with 24 digs.
 
In the first set, the Saints trailed 20-15 but scored three straight points to bounce back. Taryn Trubich started the run with a kill, and after a QU error, Julia Greaves notched a kill to pull the Saints to 20-18. Quincy got to set point and after a Hawks service error, Mikaela Lahm had a solo block. The Saints rally fell short as Quincy had a kill to end the set.
 
Set two was close the whole way and featured 14 ties and six lead changes. The Saints trailed 19-7 but scored four of the next five points to take a 21-20 lead. Demi Maniaci had a block and a kill in the run, which was capped by a Lahm service ace. The set was tied at 22-all and 23-all before the Hawks scored two straight points for the win.
 
The final set was just as close as the previous two, and the Saints trailed 22-18 before reeling off three straight points. Lahm and Welling had back-to-back kills, and a QU error brought the Saints to 22-21. The Hawks took a 23-21 lead before Maryville scored three consecutive points. Welling finished a play, and a Hawks hitting error tied the set at 23-23. Welling pounded down another kill to give the Saints set point, but the Hawks tallied three in a row to end the match.
 
Lahm added eight kills while hitting .389, and Hannah Seitter handed out 25 assists for the Saints. Samantha Haegele led Quincy (6-8 overall, 2-3 GLVC) with 12 kills. Maryville plays at No. 18 ranked Truman State Saturday afternoon.
