Hana Michael led Maryville with 10 kills but the University of Missouri-St. Louis hit .314 to down the Saints in straight sets 25-20, 25-18, 25-12 Tuesday evening at Moloney Arena.
The Saints roared out of the gates by scoring six of the first seven points of the match.
Ali Lampen served an ace to open the match, and #Mikaela# Lahm had a kill. After the Tritons scored their first point, Lahm notched two straight kills to push the Saints back ahead. UMSL had a hitting error, and
Laura Welling's kill put the Saints on top 6-1. UMSL settled down and answered with six straight points to edge ahead. The set stayed close until the Tritons edged ahead 15-12. After an UMSL miscue, Lahm had a kill and a Triton hitting error tied the set at 16-16. However, UMSL scored three straight and moved on to take the set.
The Tritons took the early lead and were up 9-7 before tallying five straight points. The Saints took advantage of an UMSL hitting error, and
Jordan McKinley had a kill to pull the Saints to 15-9. The Tritons scored six of seven points to go up 2-0. The Tritons tried to edge ahead in set three but Michael twice had kills to tie the set, the last at 5-5. UMSL tacked on five unanswered points to build an edge.
Grace Balcerak had a kill for the Saints to stop the run until UMSL scored five points in a six point span. The Saints were unable to cut into the lead as the Tritons moved to 16-13 overall, 9-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
In addition to her 10 kills, Michael added seven digs for Maryville. Lampen had 11 digs, while
Hannah Seitter had 20 assists and eight digs. Chelsea Burkle led UMSL with 14 kills while hitting .345 in the contest. The Saints return to the court Friday, Nov. 15, as No. 23 Truman State comes to town for a 7 p.m. match.
