The Maryville volleyball team battled at Southern Indiana, the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division leaders, but the Screaming Eagles held off a determined effort by the Saints. USI posted a 25-19, 30-28, 25-19 win over Maryville in Evansville, Ind., Saturday evening.
The Saints trailed early in set one and were down 9-8 before taking their first lead. After a USI hitting error, Laura Welling's kill gave Maryville a 10-9 advantage. Taryn Trubich tipped in a shot for a 12-11 lead, and Welling kill was good for a 13-12 Maryville cushion. However, that would prove to be the last lead for the Saints as USI took the first set.
In set two, USI built an 11-6 lead. Grace Balcerak had a kill, and after a USI hitting error, Julia Greaves finished a Trubich pass to draw the Saints to 11-9. The Screaming Eagles scored but Jordan McKinley and Welling notched consecutive kills as the Saints cut the deficit to just one. Maryville finally forged a 14-14 tie, and a USI hitting miscue gave the Saints a 16-15 lead. The set then went back and forth with 10 more ties. A Balcerak kill built a 27-26 lead but USI scored two straight points. Yet another Balcerak kill deadlocked the set at 28-28. However, the Screaming Eagles tallied two straight for a 30-28 win. The set would become Maryville's second longest set of the season, surpassed only by the 31-29 set at Webster.
The Saints were down 18-11 in the third set but inched back into with a 5-0 run. Lahm and Welling had back-to-back kills to start the burst. After a USI error, Hannah Seitter served up an ace, and a Screaming Eagles hitting error pulled the Saints to 18-15. A Michael kill inched the Saints to 20-18 but USI held off the comeback to close out the win.
Laura Welling led the Saints (8-21, 1-13 GLVC) with 10 kills, while Hana Michael added eight kills and 16 digs. Ali Lampen dug 29 balls, and Hannah Seitter handed out 22 assists. Erica Oberbroeckling and Erin Goldschmidt led Southern Indiana (21-6, 12-2) with 12 kills apiece. The Saints play their final road match of the season Sunday at Bellarmine.
