Saints Down UMSL To Win GLVC West Division

The Maryville women’s basketball team used a late 12-2 run en route to a 69-61 victory over visiting Missouri-St. Louis to win the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division. By claiming the division title, Maryville clinched the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Deaconess Hospital GLVC Tournament. The division title is the first for the Saints since joining the league.
 
Trailing 52-49 with 8:28 to play, the Saints made the game-winning run. Kate Childs started the burst with a layup, and Brittnye McSparron scored to put Maryville ahead 53-52. UMSL scored to take its final lead of the day, but McSparron had a three-point play to push the Saints on top 56-54 with 4:52 left in the game. Samantha Robison sank one free throw, and McSparron stole the ball and cruised in for a layup and a 59-54 lead. Angela Pepowski hit a jumper from the wing to close out the run and a 61-54 lead. UMSL converted a layup but the Saints answered with a hoop by Childs and two free throws from McSparron. The Tritons hit a 3-pointer but Maryville sealed the win with free throws from Shelby Miller and Childs.
 
McSparron tied her season high with 20 points to lead four Saints in double figures. Childs added 14, and Miller chipped in 12 points. Pepowski contributed 10 points to the attack. Hazaria Washington led UMSL (15-11, 10-8) with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
 
The Saints improve to 17-9 overall, 13-5 in the GLVC, the most wins they have recorded in conference play since joining the league. As the No. 2 seed, Maryville has earned a first-round bye and is next in action for the quarterfinals of the GLVC Tournament starting Friday, March 8, at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind. Their opponent will be determined after first-round action Sunday, March 3.
