Baseball Falls in Season-Opening Doubleheader at Harding

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 In the season-opening doubleheader at Harding, the Maryville baseball team rallied to tie game one, but Bison bounced back to edge the Saints 6-3. In game two, the Saints scored the first run but Harding answered with seven runs in the second inning en route to sweeping the doubleheader.

Harding opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first and tacked on a single score in the second. The Saints put two runners aboard in the top of the third with no one out but Harding slipped out of trouble without surrendering a run.

Maryville loaded the bases in the fourth when Colby White doubled, Eric Keling walked and Kyle Kinyon was hit by a pitch. The Saints were unable to push across a run but finally broke through in the fifth.

Jared Green and Nick Little singled to put two aboard, and White delivered the first RBI of the season to draw the Saints to 3-1. A groundout pushed two runners into scoring position, and Keling singled up the middle to plate both runs and tie the game 3-3.

However, the Bison loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth inning, and Matt Calhoun cleared the bases for the game-winning runs.

In game two, the Saints grabbed the lead in the top of the first. Corey Gall opened the game with a leadoff single and took second on a wild pitch. He moved to third on a groundout. White worked a walk, and Keling was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kaleb Depew had an RBI fielder’s choice to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.

Maryville retired Harding in order in the bottom of the first and threatened again in the top of the second. Nick Stading was hit by a pitch and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch but was stranded at second. However, in the bottom of the second, the Bison used four hits, two walks and a hit by pitch to string across seven runs for a lead they would not give up. The Bison sealed the victory with a tally in the third inning and put up another crooked number in the fourth frame. The Saints did add a run in the sixth but the Bison closed out a 20-2 win.

The teams are slated to play another doubleheader Sunday starting at 1 p.m.
