The Maryville baseball team played a pair of dramatic games in splitting a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader against Indianapolis. The Saints claimed the first game 4-3 on Jared Green’s RBI double in the bottom of the 12th inning to stretch their winning streak to six, the longest since a seven-game string April 2008. The Greyhounds edged the Saints 4-3 with a tally in the top of the seventh to close out the four-game series. Indianapolis ended Maryville’s five-game winning streak to open conference play, the longest to start league play in program history.

The Greyhounds took the lead with a single tally in the top of the fourth and two more in the fifth inning. The Saints rallied in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game. With two outs, Eric Keling singled, and Mike Wilkinson was hit by a pitch. Green drew a walk to load the bases for pinch hitter Nick Stading. The move paid off when Stading drilled a double to right field to tie the game at 3-3.

The relief pitchers took over and neither team scored over the next five innings. Maryville’s Brandon Sarkissian took over for starter Brett Hancock and held Indianapolis to two hits over six innings of outstanding relief work. The Saints repeatedly threatened to end the game but the Greyhounds had two outstanding defensive plays to keep Maryville off the scoreboard. The Saints finally broke through in the bottom of the 12th. Wilkinson walked with two outs and Green launched a double deep down the left field line as Wilkinson dashed around the bases for the game-winning run.

Much like in game one, Indianapolis jumped out to another 3-0 lead to start game two. The Greyhounds scored twice in the top of the first and expanded their lead to three with one more run in the fourth. Corey Gall started the bottom of the sixth with a single, and Colby White reached when a bouncer to short was misplayed. Keling earned a free pass to load the bases. Wilkinson lashed a single to center to get the Saints on the scoreboard 3-1. Green added another RBI single to trim the deficit to just 3-2. Kaleb Depew lifted a sac fly to score another run and forge a 3-3 tie. The Saints still only had one out but were unable to push across the go-ahead run.

In the top of the seventh, Anthony Asalon doubled and came around to score on Ryan Wides’ RBI single through the left side of the Saints infield. The Saints were unable to get a runner aboard in the seventh inning as the Greyhounds held off the Saints in the series finale.

Maryville stands at 6-8 overall, 5-1 in the GLVC. The Greyhounds see their record move to 10-8 overall, 2-6 in the GLVC.
