Baseball Falls Short in Doubleheader at North Alabama

The Maryville baseball team voyaged to Florence, Ala., for a doubleheader at North Alabama. The Saints
baseball pitching staff limited North Alabama to just two hits but the Lions pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fifth to post a 3-0 win in game one. In the second tilt, North Alabama broke open a close game to register a 10-3 win.
 
Jared Green doubled with one out in the first but was stranded in scoring position. Bob Miller recorded Maryville’s second double but he too was unable to come around and score for the Saints. Starter Brett Hancock limited North Alabama to just one hit in his three innings of work. The Saints had their best chance to record a run in the fifth frame. Daniel Barnett and Nick Little worked back-to-back walks. #Kolby O’Dowd# came on as a pinch runner but was out at the plate after a Green single. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, UNA’s Dylan Boston drove in two runs with a double for all the runs the Lions would need. The Saints put at least one runner aboard in every inning but was unable to drive in a run.
 
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Saints tallied a run in the top of the first when Kaleb Depew singled, stole second and moved to third on Colby White’s single. Depew sprinted home on Mike Wilkinson’s RBI grounder for a 1-0 Maryville lead. UNA answered with two runs in the home half of the first. The Lions added three more runs to build a 5-1 lead. O’Dowd and Little opened the top of the fifth and the pair both moved up a base after an infield groundout. White came through with a two-out single to score two runs as the Saints closed the gap to 5-3. However, the Lions recorded five runs in the bottom of the fifth and eased to the victory.
 
The Saints are 0-6 while North Alabama improves to 10-5. Maryville stays in the state of Alabama and plays at Montevallo Thursday.
