Despite taking the lead in both games, the Maryville baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at the University of Missouri-St. Louis Wednesday afternoon in north St. Louis. The Tritons claimed 8-1 and 8-5 wins to snap the Saints two-game winning streak.
In the top of the third,
Nick Little drew a walk and moved into scoring position on a
Kyle Kinyon sac bunt.
Corey Gall lashed a single down the left field line to put the Saints ahead 1-0. The Tritons answered with two runs in the home half of the third when they strung together four straight singles. UMSL tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth before pulling away late.
The Saints stormed to an early game two lead with four runs in the top of the first. Gall and
Colby White opened the game with back-to-back singles, and
Eric Keling walked to load the bases.
Bob Miller singled in the first run, and Kinyon’s long single to center plated two more runs. Little lofted an RBI single to left field to cap the four-run outburst. In the top of the third, Keling tripled and Kinyon drove in his third run of the game with a sac fly to build a 5-0 lead. Maryville starter
Scott Pennington did not allow a hit through the first three innings, but the Tritons broke through for six runs in the fourth. The Saints tried to rally and got the leadoff hitter aboard in the next three innings but could not push across another run. The Saints out hit the Tritons but hurt themselves with four miscues.
The Saints slip to 14-16 overall, 13-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Tritons improve to 17-15, 13-9 in the league. Maryville is back in action on the road for four games at William Jewell.
