William Jewell grabbed early leads in both ends of a doubleheader and held off late charges by Maryville as the Saints dropped the first two games of a four-game Great Lakes Valley Conference road series. The Saints lost game one 7-3 and game two 5-2.
The Cardinals tallied single runs in the first three innings before the Saints scored a run in the top of the fourth.
Mike Wilkinson doubled and scored on
Jared Green’s RBI single that got the Saints on the scoreboard. William Jewell scored a run to take a 4-1 edge. Maryville rallied when Caleb Depew and Colby While recorded back-to-back singled.
Corey Gall walked to load the bases, and Wilkinson singled in two runs to pull the Saints to 4-3. However, WJC scored three runs in the top of the seventh to keep the Saints at bay.
William Jewell again took the early lead by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. The Saints answered when
Eric Keling doubled, and
Tyler Omlid traded places with him with a double to cut the deficit to 3-1. Depew singled to open the top of the third, and White recorded a single. Gall put down a sac bunt to push both runners into scoring position. Keling grounded out to third and drove in the Saints second run. The Cardinals closed out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Maryville loaded the bases in the sixth frame with two outs but was unable to push across a run. The Saints got the tying run to the plate but the Cardinals held on for the win.
The teams will play two more games Sunday to close out the series in Liberty, Mo.
