Box Score 2 Maryville overcame an early two-run deficit en route to a 4-2 win over William Jewell in the first game of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader in Liberty, Mo. The Cardinals bounced back to win game two and take the series.
The Cardinals quickly jumped on top with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. In the third frame, the Saints made WJC pay for a crucial error. With two outs,
Kyle Kinyon reached on a miscue by the Cardinals defense.
Kaleb Depew walked, and
Colby White singled to load the bases.
Mike Wilkinson cleared the bases with a double to push the Saints ahead 3-2. Maryville added an insurance run in the seventh when
Jared Green singled and moved to second after a
Nick Little walk. Depew drilled an RBI single for a 4-2 Saints lead. Saints starter
Brett Hancock went the distance and struck out seven to record the victory. In his last two starts, he has notched 17 strikeouts and given up only three runs.
In the series finale, the Saints scored a run in the top of the first but the Cardinals roared back to notch the 12-1 win. Depew began the game with a walk and took second on a passed ball.
Corey Gall singled him in for the quick 1-0 lead. However, WJC answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning and strung together five hits to push across four more runs in the third frame as the Cardinals eased to the 12-1 victory. The Saints were limited to five hits but did work four walks.
Maryville is now 15-19 overall, 14-12 in the GLVC. William Jewell now stands at 16-22 overall, 12-16 in the league. The Saints are scheduled to be in action Tuesday, April 23, as McKendree visits Weber Field for a 6 p.m. contest.
