Visiting Quincy spoiled Senior Day for Maryville as the Hawks took both ends of a doubleheader Sunday at Weber Field. Quincy edged the Saints 4-2 in game one and posted a 7-0 victory in game two. The squads will close out the rain-delayed series with a doubleheader Monday starting at Noon.
In the first contest, the Hawks pushed across a run in the top of the first before the Saints answered in the bottom of the fifth.
Colby White singled to lead off the inning and start the outburst.
Bob Miller reached on a throwing error and dashed all the way to third as White scored the game-tying run.
Kyle Kinyon plated the go-ahead run with a groundout as Miller’s run put the Saints ahead 2-1. Quincy used two straight hits and a sac fly to tie the game in the top of the sixth. In the next inning, Kenny May smacked a two-run homer to right center for the Quincy decisive score. Hawks starter Clayton Hicks gave up just four hits in going the distance.
In game two, QU pitcher Charles Kapala limited the Saints to just three hits to post the complete game victory. He held Maryville without a hit for 4-2/3 innings before
Corey Gall smashed a double to left center for the first Saints hit.
Jared Green, who had walked earlier in the inning, reached third as the Saints had two in scoring position, but both were stranded.
Nick Little led off the sixth inning with a double and took third on a ground out. However, the Saints could not push across the run, and the Hawks sealed the win with four runs in the seventh inning.
The Saints slip to 15-21 overall, 14-14 in the GLVC. The Hawks improve to 24-14 overall, 18-10 in the conference.
