Saints Drop GLVC Tourney Opener 8-6 to Drury

Box Score In a back and forth contest, the Maryville baseball team dropped an 8-6 decision to top-seed Drury to open the Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Tournament at Bosse Field in Evansville, Ind. The Saints drop into the consolation bracket and will face Missouri S&T in an elimination game later today.

Colby White smashed his first home run of the season in the top of the second inning to put the Saints ahead 1-0. His solo shot curled just inside the foul pole for the 1-0 lead. The Panthers charged into the lead with five runs in the bottom of the third inning as they used four hits and one Saints error for a 5-1 edge. The Saints came right back with their own five spot in the top of the fourth.  White started the outburst with a walk, and Kyle Kinyon reached on a fielder’s choice. Bob Miller’s grounder was misplayed by Drury as White scored his second straight run. Jared Green followed with an RBI single to center to score another run, and two Drury errors allowed another two scores to come home. Eric Keling shot a ball to first base for a hit as the Saints charged ahead 6-5.

Drury tied the game in the sixth with a double, sac bunt and sac fly for a 6-6 decision.  The game moved into the eighth when the Panthers strung together two hits and took advantage of a Maryville error to score the go-ahead runs. Spencer Wilmes doubled with the bases loaded for the decisive swing of the game.

The loss snapped the Saints five-game winning streak heading into the GLVC Tournament.
