Box Score Corey Gall’s RBI single in the top of the 13th inning boosted Maryville to a thrilling 6-4 victory in an elimination game at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Tournament at Bosse Field in Evansville, Ind. The game tied for the longest tournament game in history and was the second longest game in Maryville program history.
In the top of the 13th inning, the Saints broke through for the go-ahead runs.
Kaleb Depew started the frame off with a single, and
Eric Keling blasted a single through the right side. Gall singled back up the middle to plate Depew, and a Missouri S&T throwing error allowed Keling to come all the way around for a 6-4 lead. In the bottom of the 13th,
Brett Hancock got the last three outs to pick up his first save of the season.
Brandon Sarkissian pitched 6-2/3 innings of relief to notch the victory.
The Saints took the lead in the first when Depew scored on an RBI single by Keling down the left field line. The Miners tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, and pushed across two runs in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. The Saints struggled to generate offense but finally broke through in the eighth.
Jared Green was hit by a pitch to open the frame, and Kolby O’Dowd singled in his first plate appearance to put runners on the corners. Depew lifted an RBI single to centerfield as the Saints drew to 3-2. After
Mike Wilkinson singled to load the bases, and Keling launched a sac fly to bring in the game-tying run for a 3-3 score.
Kyle Kinyon singled to lead off the 12th inning for the Saints.
Andrew Naegeli came on as a pinch runner, took second on a passed ball and reached third on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch allowed Naegeli to dash home with the go-ahead run. Missouri S&T answered with a run in the bottom of the 12th. A single by Michael Lockett started the frame, and the Miners sacrificed him over to second. Tyler Bodenstab, who came on earlier as a defensive replacement, lofted a ball to short left center as the Miners tied the game 4-4. Missouri S&T eventually loaded the bases but the Saints escaped the jam with a fly out setting up the drama in the 13th inning. The only longer game in school history was a 14-inning game against Loras College, March 4, 2005.
The Saints, who are 3-0 in extra inning games this season, improve to 21-23, while the Miners fall to 24-25. Maryville plays another elimination game Friday, May 10, at 2:30 p.m. as they face the loser of the No. 4 Saint Joseph’s/No. 1 Drury game.
