Spartans Slip Past Saints in Volleyball Action

Box Score Seeking to gain a measure of revenge after dropping the match that decided the Maryville Classic volleyball tournament Saturday afternoon, the Saints made the short trip to Missouri Baptist. Maryville won set two but the Spartans took the last two sets to post a 3-1 Tuesday night. Missouri Baptist prevailed 25-11, 18-25, 25-14, 25-19.

In the first set, the Saints were down just 6-4 before MBU reeled off five straight points to take charge. A kill by Samantha Callahan drew Maryville to 12-6 but the Spartans scored seven of the next eight points and eased to the win. The second set saw the Saints down 6-5 but scored three straight kills to jump into the lead. Maryville still led 15-13 until a Callahan kill started a 7-0 run as the Saints evened the match at 1-1.

Missouri Baptist started the third set by scoring seven of the first eight points as the Saints were unable to mount a serious comeback. Set four saw the teams trade runs in a back-and-forth affair. Trailing 6-2, Maryville scored five straight points to edge ahead 7-6. Neither team led by more than two points, and the Spartans led 15-14 before Mikaela Lahm notched three straight kills to put the Saints ahead. However, the Spartans answered with a 5-0 run to jump back ahead and held on for a 3-1 victory.

Lahm led the Saints with 15 kills and hit .481 in the match. Ali Lampen led four Maryville players in double-figure digs with 17. Maddy Hammack led MBU with 16 kills, and Molly DeClue recorded a match-high 18 digs.

The Saints dip to 2-3 on the season, while the Spartans improve to 9-1. Maryville heads to Durant, Okla., for a tournament this weekend.
