The Saints volleyball squad played one of its longest final sets in program history and just fell short 23-21 in the deciding fifth set at McKendree. The Bearcats won the match 3-2 (25-14, 21-25, 25-17, 20-25, 23-21). The fifth set featured 18 ties and nine lead changes.
The Saints had three match points in the fifth set but could not convert their chances. Maryville had an opportunity at 17-16 to end the match after a
Mikaela Lahm kill but the Bearcats scored. Later, McKendree scored two straight points to earn a match point at 19-18, but
Demi Maniaci answered with a kill. The Bearcats took a 20-19 edge, but
Laura Welling and
Julia Greaves had back-to-back kills for Maryville's final match point. However, Bailey Kampwerth had three consecutive kills to end the match.
Laura Welling pounded down 16 kills to lead the Saints. Greaves, Lahm and Maniaci all finished with 11 kills, while
Hana Michael had a double-double with 10 kills and 18 digs.
Ali Lampen recorded 36 digs, the fourth most in a match in program history, and the second highest total in a GLVC contest.
Hannah Seitter handed out 37 assists.
The Saints sport a 5-8 overall mark and are 0-3 in the GLVC. The Bearcats improve to 2-8 overall, 1-1 in the league. Maryville is back at home this weekend as Lewis visits Moloney Arena for a 7 pm match, Saturday, Sept. 28
