The Maryville volleyball team battled to hand Lewis its first loss in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, but the Flyers held off a charge by the Saints to post a 3-0 win Saturday afternoon at Moloney Arena. Set scores were 25-22, 27-25, 25-19.

In set one, the Saints trailed 6-5 but Lewis tallied three straight points to stretch its advantage to 9-5. Maryville was still down 10-6 before a kill by Grace Balcerak and a Lewis hitting error drew the Saints to 10-8. The Flyers slowly built a four-point lead before the Saints made one late charge. Trailing 20-16, Hana Michael's kill was the first of three straight points. After a Lewis error, Demi Maniaci's kill drew the Saints to 20-19 but the Flyers held on.

The second set featured eight ties and three lead changes and was close the whole way. The Flyers had the biggest lead of the set at 22-18 before the Saints rallied and forced the set into extra points. Maniaci had a kill, and Laura Welling and Balcerak teamed up for a block to pull Maryville to 22-20. After a Lewis hitting effort, Balcerak had a solo block to forge a 22-22 tie. Hanna Seitter tipped a ball that landed for 23-22 but Lewis tied the game at 23-all. Maryville saved two set points, and a Welling kill tied the set at 25-25. However, Lewis had a kill and a Maryville hitting error gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead.

The Saints tallied the first two points of the third set until the Flyers eventually tied things up at 4-4. Julia Greaves answered with a kill to put the Saints on top 5-4, but that would prove to be the last lead for Maryville. The Flyers tied the set at 8-8 and edged out to a 14-11 advantage. Lewis used a 5-0 to take its biggest lead of the set. The Saints made one last charge as Greaves had a kill, and after a Flyers hitting miscue, Ali Lampen served up an ace to pull Maryville to 21-17. The Flyers pulled away to improve to 7-4 overall, 3-0 in the GLVC.

Maniaci led the Saints with 11 kills, while Lampen handled a match-high 16 digs. The Saints slip to 5-9 overall, 0-4 in the league. Maryville is back in action Sunday as Wisconsin-Parkside visits for a 1 p.m. match.
