Volleyball Splits Two Matches to Open Maryville Classic

The Maryville volleyball team split a pair of matches as it opened the 2013 season by hosting the Maryville Classic. The Saints defeated St. Ambrose 3-1 (17-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-22) and were edged by Bemidji State 3-2 (23-25, 25-21, 24-26, 25-12, 15-10).
 
Mikaela Lahm led three Saints in double figure kills with a match-high 13 kills as the Saints rebounded to win the last three sets against St. Ambrose. Hana Michael recorded a double-double with 16 digs and 11 kills, while Demi Maniaci added 10 kills while hitting .364. Lahm was a force on the defensive end as she picked up three solo blocks and three block assists. The Fighting Bees hit .324 to win the first set but the Saints allowed SAU to hit just .059, .118 and .114 over the last three sets. Maryville had 12 kills and just three errors in hitting a match-high .300 in the final set. St. Ambrose libero Karrah Toby was tremendous with 28 digs in the match. Maryville freshman Ali Lampen had a strong debut with 15 digs for the Saints.
 
In the final match of the day, Bemidji State forced a decisive fifth set and won the final two sets to rally for the victory. Michael again had a double-double with a team-high 12 kills to go along with 16 digs. Lahm added 11 kills, while Lampen dug a match-high 24 balls to pace the Maryville defense. BSU took control in the final set by hitting .467 while limiting the Saints to just a .125 hitting percentage. BSU's Courtney Volkman notched a triple-double with 45 assists, 12 kills and 13 digs.
 
In the first match of the tournament, Missouri Baptist downed Bemidji State in four sets. The tournament concludes Saturday with four more matches beginning at 10 a.m.
