Flyers Edge Saints 76-73 Despite 25 From Miller

Lewis University's Jamie Johnson hit a jumper in the lane with 10.8 seconds left in the game to hand the Maryville women's basketball team a 76-73 defeat in the Great Lakes Valley Conference home opener for the Saints. The contest featured 13 ties and 11 lead changes as neither team led by more than five points during the game.
 
With the game tied at 73-73, the visiting Flyers ran the clock down. Johnson caught the ball, dribbled into the lane and her jumper put Lewis ahead 75-73. The Saints pushed the ball down the court but were called for a charge with 3.5 ticks remaining. Kristin Itschner made one free throw with 2.2 seconds left in the game for the final margin as a Saints desperation 3-point missed the mark.
 
To set up the dramatic final moments, the Saints trailed 73-70 before Erica Lorton hit one free throw. Rita Flynn followed with a bucket in the lane to forge a 73-73 tie with 43 seconds to play. As Lewis inbounded the ball, Shelby Miller swiped a steal. However, the Saints missed a 3-pointer, and the Flyers connected for the game winner.
 
Miller poured in 25 points and handed out eight assists to pace the Saints attack. Flynn and Lorton both finished with 10 points apiece, and Lorton narrowly missed out on a double-double with nine rebounds. Jamie Johnson led Lewis (9-2, 3-0 GLVC) with 20 points, and Mariyah Henley recorded a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
 
The Saints (8-5, 1-2) had their four-game winning streak snapped but are back in action Saturday when they host Wisconsin-Parkside for a 1 p.m. game.
