Hana Michael recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs to guide the Maryville volleyball team to a sweep at William Jewell Friday night in Liberty, Mo., in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match. The Saints won by match scores of 25-18, 25-15, 25-15.
In the first set, were holding a narrow 18-16 lead before running off three straight points. After a WJC hitting error, Michael followed with a kill, and another Cardinals miscue handed the Saints a 21-16 lead. The hosts scored a point but the Saints answered with another 3-0 run to take control.
Ashley Selman had a kill, then she combined with
Grace Balcerak on a block.
Taryn Trubich served an ace, and Michael's kill ended the set.
Maryville was up 9-5 in set two and took command on the strength of a 6-0 burst. Selman had a kill, and after a WJC hitting error,
Ali Lampen served back-to-back aces. Balcerak and
Maddie Timmermann recorded consecutive kills as the Saints staked themselves to a double-digit lead. At 15-7, the Saints sealed the win with a 4-0 burst.
Laura Welling started the run, and after a WJC error, Timmermann chipped in a kill. Welling's next kill pushed the cushion to 19-7 and the Saints cruised to the win.
Holding a narrow 12-11 lead midway through set three, the Saints again asserted control via an 8-1 run. The Cardinals committed consecutive hitting errors, and Timmermann served an ace. After a WJC point, Selman's kill was the first of five straight Maryville points. Balcerak finished a point, and the Cardinals committed a ball handling error. After a Michael kill, Trubich dialed up another ace for a 20-12 lead. The Saints eased to the victory.
En route to her third double-double of the season, Michael hit .348 to pace the Saints attack. Selman notched seven kills and recorded four blocks. Lampen topped the team with 14 digs.
Hannah Seitter recorded 18 assists, while Trubich added 17 assists.
The Saints stand at 9-7 and have evened their league slate at 5-5. Maryville returns to the court Saturday afternoon as they head to Rockhurst for a 3 p.m. tilt.
