Lewis Rallies Past Saints 3-2 in Men's Soccer

St. Louis - Zach Klipsch and Ryan Butchart scored in the first half for Maryville but visiting Lewis rallied with three second-half goals to hand the Saints a 3-2 defeat Sunday afternoon in St. Louis. The Saints dominated the first half to take the lead while the Flyers carried the play after halftime.

The Saints jumped on top when Lewis was called for a penalty in the goal area. Klipsch slotted home from the spot for a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute of action. The Flyers almost drew level but a shot hit the post and bounced away. The Saints nearly doubled their lead but Lewis keeper Omar Ramirez tipped away a rising shot by Butchart midway through the first half. However, Butchart found the back of the next in the 32nd minute. He and Kory Clawson worked a give-and-go combination up the left side of the Lewis defense, and Butchart pushed a shot to the far side for a 2-0 Maryville lead.

The Flyers got on the scoreboard just over two minutes into the second half when Krystian Nowak drilled a hard shot up into the right corner to cut the Saints lead to 2-1. George Thomson showed why he is one of the top scorers in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with two goals in less than two minutes. The Flyers were awarded a kick from the spot in the 57th minute, and Thomson converted to tie the game. In the 59th minute, he collected a pass from Lenin Roa-Tapia and chipped a shot into the Saints net for a 3-2 Lewis (7-3-2, 6-2-2 GLVC) lead.

Butchart made a bid for his second score of the game but his attempt in the 70th minute was stopped. The Saints pressed for a goal to push the game to overtime but were unable to draw even. Luke Gilsinger had an attempt trickle wide left, and Clawson's shot spun but was grabbed by Ramirez.

The Saints are now 3-6-4 overall, 2-6-2 in the GLVC.
