Schmitz and Foley Help Saints Down Lewis 2-1

St. Louis - The Maryville women's soccer team tallied two first-half goals and made it stand up in a 2-1 triumph over Lewis Sunday afternoon. The win snaps the Saints' two-game skid as they improve to 4-5-3 overall, 3-5-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The Saints roared out to an early lead when they scored in the fourth minute of play. Jen Jung started the play with a long free kick that drifted to the left edge of the Lewis penalty area. Danielle Schmitz ran on to the ball and slid it in the left side for an early 1-0 lead. Maryville tacked on another score off another set piece. On a corner kick, Katy Rood drilled a pass into the middle of the Lewis goal area, Jung collected the ball, pushed it over to Shannon Foley who converted for her third goal of the season.

Two early chances almost built a three-goal lead for Maryville but Lewis keeper Mara Bennett made two saves in the second half. The Flyers got on the scoreboard in the 60th minute when they took advantage of a good bounce. A failed clearing attempt by the Maryville defense found Jessica Chavez. Her shot hit a Maryville defender and spun into the Saints net as the Maryville lead was cut in half. Lewis had two strong scoring changes over the next 15 minutes but Madison Buelow came up with two saves to preserve the Maryville lead as the Saints held on for the victory.

The Saints up their mark to 4-5-3 overall, 3-5-2 in the GLVC. The Flyers drop to 2-6-4 overall, 2-5-3 in the league.
