Rensselaer, Ind. - The Maryville women's soccer team had three different goal scorers as the Saints recorded a 3-1 road victory at Saint Joseph's Friday evening. The Saints improve to 5-5-3 overall, 4-5-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The Saints carried the early play with three shots before Amanda Wiechens broke through with her fourth score of the season. She collected a pass from Katy Rood and slotted in the ball for a 1-0 lead just past the 17-minute mark in the game. The Pumas had their first shot on goal in the game but Madison Buelow saved the shot to keep the Saints ahead. Wiechens had two more shots on target turned aside as the Saints instead settled for a 1-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Shannon Foley dribbled in, drew the SJC keeper and slid a pass over to Danielle Schmitz who scored in the 55th minute for a 2-0 Saints lead. The host Pumas pulled one goal back on a fortunate bounce. Brittany Santoro's shot hit the crossbar and bounced back into the Maryville goal to trim the deficit to 2-1 an hour into the game. However, Foley again was the playmaker on the goal that would seal the win. In the 67th minute of action, she hit a deep pass to Ashley Pogue who tallied her first goal of the season.
The Saints stay on the road in Indiana and play at Indianapolis Sunday afternoon.
