Quincy-Native Foley Pushes Saints Past Hawks 1-0

Quincy, Ill. - Quincy-native Shannon Foley scored in the fifth minute of play and the Maryville women's soccer team made it tally stand up as the Saints downed the Quincy Hawks 1-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference Friday night. The goal was her fourth of the season and ties her for the team lead.

The Saints earned a corner kick four minutes into the game to set up the early goal. Foley collected the ball in traffic and converted the game's first shot into what would prove to be the only goal of the game. Less than one minute later, Amanda Wiechens header nearly found the back of the QU net before it was saved by Hawks keeper Megan Swanson. Ashley Burton made a bit to tie the game but Bailey Doerflinger turned the shot aside to preserve the 1-0 Maryville lead. QU had to more chances in the first half but intermission arrived with the Saints still up 1-0.

The Hawks had another shot on goal but Doerflinger again made the save. Midway through the second half, Jen Jung and Foley had back-to-back chances stopped by QU's Swanson. The Hawks pressed for the equalizer, and had an attempt in the 78th minute turned back by Doerflinger. The Saints keeper made four saves on the night to post Maryville's fifth shutout of the season.
