Own Goal Sinks Saints in Double OT Versus Truman

St. Louis - An own goal in the second overtime session sank the Maryville women's soccer team as Truman State escaped with a 2-1 victory on Senior Day. The Saints had pulled level on a goal in the 85th minute after the visitors scored in the first half.

The Bulldogs nearly took the lead in the 25th minute of play when Melanie Hunt's shot hit the crossbar before bouncing out of harm. However, TSU pushed ahead in Alexis Heffernan scored in the 36th minute of play. After halftime, the Saints got an early attempt at tying the game when Amanda Wiechens' shot was turned aside by TSU goalie Katie Mattingly. Shannon Foley and Katy Rood also had shots on target that were saved. The Bulldogs again found the woodwork in the 84th minute when a shot struck the left post. Just over a minute later, though, the Saints pulled even. After earning a corner kick, Nadia Abu-Douleh lofted a cross into the penalty area. Wiechens ran onto it and headed the ball into the TSU net with just over five minutes to play in the second half.

Jen Jung, Maryville's lone senior, had the only shot in the first overtime but her attempt flew wide. In the second OT session, Truman earned a corner kick. Megan Frkovic crossed the ball into the middle, and a scramble ensued. The Bulldogs kicked the ball forward, and the Saints tried to clear the area. However, the clearance pass instead tumbled into the Maryville goal for the Truman State winner.

The Saints dip to 6-7-3 overall, 5-7-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Bulldogs are now 12-3-2 overall, 10-2-2 in the league. Maryville finishes the regular season Wednesday as it travels to city-rival University of Missouri-St. Louis for a 6:30 p.m. game.
