Indianapolis - Despite 12 kills from Maddie Timmermann, the Maryville volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision at Indianapolis Sunday afternoon. The Saints fell 25-11, 25-23, 25-20, 25-16 to one of the top teams in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The Greyhounds started off the match by scoring nine of the first 11 points to take early command.
Ashley Selman had a kill, but the UIndy lead soon reached double digits as the hosts won the first set. The Saints scored four straight points to jump to a 4-1 mark in set two. Laura Welling led the way as she served two straight aces to provide an early cushion for Maryville. After a UIndy service error,
Hana Michael notched a kill, and another home hitting error handed the Saints a 7-2 lead. Later, Selman had a kill and she joined with
Grace Balcerak for a block. A tip by
Taryn Trubich built an 11-4 Saints lead and forced a Greyhounds' timeout. UIndy got as close as 14-10 before a Welling kill and back-to-back aces boosted the Saints to a 17-10 advantage. The Greyhounds slowly inched back and cut the deficit to one, but Timmermann's kill gave Maryville the second set at 25-23.

The Saints turned a 6-4 deficit into an 8-6 lead on four straight kills. Michael and Trubich started the run, and Welling closed it with consecutive kills for a two-point lead. However, UIndy responded with four straight points to take the lead. Another 3-0 run by the Greyhounds built a 16-10 lead. Timmermann answered with two straight kills but that would be as close as the Saints would get in the third set. Maryville was down 12-8 in the fourth set before a Greyhounds hitting error and Timmermann kill brought the Saints to 12-10. UIndy steadied itself with three straight points and 10 of the next 12 to slowly pull away to improve to 14-8 overall, 11-2 in the GLVC.

Timmermann finished with a .375 hitting percentage, while Selman chipped in eight kills and four blocks. Trubich notched a double-double with 18 assists and 10 digs, while Michael finished with a team-high 12 digs.

The Saints are 14-10 overall, 5-8 in the league. Maryville makes the short trip to the University of Missouri-St. Louis Tuesday night for its next action.
