Normandy, Mo. -Â The Maryville volleyball team was aiming for its first season sweep over city-rival University of Missouri-St. Louis but the Tritons kept the Saints from making a charge and posted a 25-21, 25-17, 25-20 win Tuesday night at the Mark Twain Building.

The opening set was tied at 2-2 before an UMSL service error and a kill by
Laura Welling gave the Saints a 4-2 edge. UMSL tied things up at 4-all before another Welling kill and an UMSL hitting error built a 6-4 for Maryville. A
Maddie Timmermann kill pushed the Saints ahead 9-8 but the Tritons eventually surged ahead for a 12-10 edge.
Grace Balcerak and a Tritons hitting miscue tied the set at 12-all before UMSL reeled off seven straight points to take command. Down 22-17 the Saints scored three straight to trim the deficit to 22-20. Another Timmermann termination drew the Saints to 23-21 until UMSL tallied two in a row to take the set.

Hana Michael's kill tied set two at 2-2 before UMSL charged ahead 8-2.
Taryn Trubich's kill ended the Tritons' run. The Saints were down 15-9 after Timmermann finished off a pass from
Hannah Seitter but the Tritons scored four in a row and eventually took a 10-point lead. The Saints made a late push and scored five of six points late before UMSL scored the final point.

Timmermann and Trubich posted back-to-back kills for a 5-3 Saints lead in set three. A Michael kill made the score 6-4 until the Tritons reeled off five straight points to take the lead. Welling tipped in a shot to trim the UMSL lead to 13-10 but the Tritons answered with another 5-0 run to take control. The Saints got as close as 21-18 but were unable to trim the lead to less than two points.

Welling led the Saints with nine kills, while Timmermann added eight kills. Ali Lampen recorded 18 digs, and Trubich was credited with 17 assists. Haley Brightwell led UMSL (14-8 overall, 9-5 Great Lakes Valley Conference) with 11 kills.

The Saints (14-11 overall, 5-9 GLVC) return home Saturday, Nov. 1, to host Bellarmine at 3 p.m. for Senior Day.
