Lebanon, Ill. - Brittany Fish sank four 3-pointers en route to 16 points, and Erica Lorton hit 7-of-8 shots as Maryville beat McKendree 77-67 Monday night in Lebanon, Ill. The game was originally scheduled to be played Jan. 5, but a winter storm in the area forced a postponement to tonight.
The Bearcats led 14-10 before two free throws by Alex Hillyer started a quick 8-0 run. Fish splashed a 3-pointer to put the Saints on top, and Hillyer added two more from the stripe. Lorton sank a jumper in the lane for an 18-14 Maryville lead midway through the first half. McKendree tied the game at 21-21 before the Saints responded by scoring eight of the next 10 points capped by a Lorton bucket for a 29-23 advantage. The Bearcats clawed back to 29-28 until the Saints closed the half on a 9-3 run for a 38-31 lead at the break.
The Saints were up 40-33 and reeled off a 10-2 run to take control early in the second half. Rita Flynn ignited the run with two free throws, and after one McKendree free throw, Jordynn Martin sank a 3-pointer. Samantha Robison scored on a layup and later made one free throw. A layup by Martin was good for a 50-34 cushion. Maryville led 60-46 with just over nine minutes to play and put the game away with an 8-2 burst, capped by a Thompson 3-pointer for a 68-48 margin.Â
Fish was 4-of-6 from beyond the arc and had her third-best scoring output of the season. Lorton dominated the paint and hit her first seven shots to finish with 14 points and tied for team high honors with eight rebounds. Shelby Miller added 11 points, while Thompson also claimed eight boards. The Saints hit 10 3-pointers and improved to 15-10 overall, 8-7 in the GLVC. Caty Ponce and Daniel Amann-Stewart both had 15 points to lead McKendree (7-16, 2-13 GLVC).
The Saints are next in action Thursday, Feb. 20, when they head out to face Truman State.
