Tritons Topple Saints 58-51 in Regular Season Finale

St. Louis - Junior Shelby Miller scored 18 points, and senior Joann Thompson snared a season-high 11 rebounds but Maryville was on the short end of a 58-51 decision to visiting University of Missouri-St. Louis Thursday on Senior Day. The game drew a program record 1,010 fans for the evening.
 
The Tritons grabbed the early lead forcing the Saints to play catch-up the rest of the first half. Alex Hillyer scored consecutive buckets in the lane, and a Miller layup tied the game at 18-18. UMSL scored six straight and eventually took a 28-20 lead at halftime.
 
UMSL stretched its advantage to 32-21 before the Saints scored back with a 10-0 burst. Rita Flynn scored inside, and Thompson converted a drive. After a wing jumper by Samantha Robison, Thompson hit another bucket. The Saints finally tied the game on a Hillyer 3-pointer from the top of the key 32-32 with 15 minutes to play.
 
The Tritons scored six straight but the Saints responded with seven consecutive points. Breann Baker started the run with a 3-pointer, and Miller followed with two from the line. Hillyer made both of the charity shots to push the Saints ahead 41-40 with 8:19 to play. It was UMSL's turn to make a run, and the visitors went on an 8-0 run to retake a 48-41 advantage with just under four minutes to play. The Saints cut the deficit to five but could get no closer.
 
Hillyer finished with 11 points to support Miller's team-high 18 points. The Saints finish the regular season 17-11 overall, 10-8 in the GLVC. The Tritons improve their mark to 20-6 overall, 13-5 in the league. Hazaria Washington had 20 points and 11 rebounds, while Devonna Smith added 11 points and 10 rebounds for UMSL.
 
The Saints have earned the No. 8 seed for the Deaconess GLVC Tournament and will host No. 9 seed Bellarmine Sunday, March 2, at 1 p.m. in Moloney Arena. The winner advances to the quarterfinals Thursday, March 6, at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.
