McKendree Rallies for 5-4 Triumph Over Saints

Box Score Lebanon, Ill. - The Maryville baseball team made the short trip over to Lebanon, Ill., to take on McKendree in a nonconference game and let a late 4-2 lead slip away as the Bearcats rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth for a walk-off 5-4 victory.
 
The Bearcats took the early lead with single tallies in the second and third inning before the Saints rallied. In the top of the fifth, Kaleb Depew reached on an error and he promptly stole second. Kyle Kinyon singled to left to drive in Depew and get the Saints on the scoreboard. In the top of the sixth, Eric Keling smashed the first pitch of the frame over the fence in right to force a 2-2 tie.
 
The Saints took their first lead with two runs in the top of the seventh. Nate Steffler walked, Sean Murphy singled to left, and Brad Ridings was hit by a pitch. With one out, Keling hustled down the line and had an RBI groundout to give Maryville a 3-2 lead. The Saints then pulled off a double steal to manufacture their fourth run as Murphy swiped home and Keling took second for a 4-2 lead.
 
The Bearcats got a leadoff double in the eighth but Brett Grempler retired the next three batters to escape trouble. McKendree loaded the bases with one out and cut the Saints lead to 4-3 on a sac fly. The Bearcats tied the game on an RBI single by Jake Kline. Grant Anderson capped the rally as he delivered the game-winning hit with a single deep to the hole at shortstop.
 
The Saints are now 2-4 on the season, while the Bearcats even their record at 2-2. Maryville will attempt to play its home opener this weekend as Saint Joseph's visits for a doubleheader Saturday, March 15, starting at Noon.
