Evansville, Ind.
- The Maryville men's basketball squad battled at Southern Indiana in the first round of the 2014 Deaconess Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament but the Screaming Eagles rallied to end the Saints season 86-78 in Evansville, Ind., Sunday afternoon.

USI, the No. 6 seed, grabbed the early lead at 10-6 before the Saints scored seven straight points to surge ahead. Armon Provo rained down a 3-pointer, and Myles Jerrett added a layup to push Maryville ahead. Asa Toney capped off the run with two free throws and a 13-10 Saints lead. Southern Indiana tied the game and there were three more tied. Toney tallied a bucket, and Jamel Johnson added a score to give the Saints a 27-23 advantage. The Screaming Eagles responded with a 9-0 run to retake the lead until Maryville received back-to-back 3-pointers by Trae Pemberton and Provo for another 33-32 Saints edge. Maryville, which was the No. 11 seed, took a 37-34 lead at intermission after a score by Toney in the final minute.

Pemberton drilled a 3-pointer to start the second half as the Saints took their biggest lead of the day 41-35. USI tallied seven of the next eight points to force another tie at 41-all. Jerrett would not led USI take the lead as his shot from beyond the arc was good. Southern Indiana tied the game three more times but a Melvin Turner 3-pointer gave the Saints a 58-55 cushion. Provo made a layup to give Maryville a 62-61 lead with 7:26 to play but it would prove to be the last of the game for the Saints. USI tallied five straight for a 66-62 lead but the Saints made one final charge. Harrison DuPont hit a layup, and one free throw by Pemberton cut the deficit to 66-65 with 4:38 remaining. Maryville got as close as 70-67 after two Pemberton free throws with just over three minutes left but the Screaming Eagles kept the Saints at bay the rest of the way.

Toney led the Saints with 25 points and five rebounds, while Provo pitched in 14 points and hit three 3-pointers. Maryville finishes the season with a record of 13-14. Aaron Nelson was outstanding for Southern Indiana (22-5) and finished with 22 points and 21 rebounds.
