Saints Beat Bellarmine 71-65 in GLVC Tourney Opener

St. Louis - Shelby Miller scored a game-high 23 points and freshman Alex Wolf provided a crucial lift off the bench with 12 rebounds as Maryville moved past Bellarmine 71-65 in the first round of the 2014 Deaconess GLVC Women's Basketball Tournament. The Saints, who are the No. 8 seed, advance to the quarterfinals and face No. 1 seed Drury Thursday, March 6, at 2:30 p.m. at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind.
 
The Saints led by three at halftime but Bellarmine scored the first five points to open the second half. The Knights took a 36-35 lead but Miller splashed in a 3-pointer to put the Saints head 38-36. Erica Lorton added two free throws to give Maryville a 40-36 lead. Bellarmine used 6-2 run to tie the game, and the contest was still deadlocked at 44-all before the Knights surged to a 52-46 advantage. The visitors took their largest lead of the day at 55-48 with 7:35 to play before the Saints responded. Miller had a drive and was fouled, and her free throw pulled Maryville to 55-51. Kristin Fomon made one free throw, and Miller sank two more from the stripe as the Saints closed to 55-54 with five minutes remaining.
 
Bellarmine sank two free throws before Lorton had scored back-to-back layups for a 59-57 Saints lead with 3:39 to go. The Knights retook the lead on a three-point play. Alex Hillyer answered for Maryville as the lead switched hands again. Bellarmine had a chance to jump back ahead but missed two free throws. Miller was fouled and hit the first but her second free throw fell off to the left. Wolf went up in traffic to haul down the offensive rebound, and Hillyer knocked down a jumper from the right side to pad the Saints lead to 64-60 with 2:26 remaining.
 
After one Hillyer free throw was good for a 65-60 advantage, the Knights scored to close to three. The Saints could only hit two of their next four free throws and were up 67-62 with 41 seconds to play. Jessica Hardin was fouled shooting a 3-pointer, and she converted all three at the line to pull Bellarmine to 67-65. Jordynn Martin was sent to the line with 31 seconds to play and made both for a 69-65 cushion with 31 ticks left. The Knights had two attempts at 3-pointers, but Rita Flynn grabbed the offensive rebound. Her two free throws with 11 seconds left sealed the win for Maryville.
 
 Miller hit nine free throws and finished with 23 points and six rebounds. Lorton tied her career high with 19 points and added eight boards. Wolf grabbed her 12 rebounds in just 13 minutes of play and added four points. Sarah Galvin led Bellarmine (13-14) with 17 points, while Jessica Hardin added 15 points.
 
The Saints improve to 18-11 on the season and are 7-1 all-time in the GLVC Tournament in three seasons of eligibility in the tourney.
