Box Score 2 St. Louis - The Maryville baseball team rode two complete games by pitchers
Tyler Omlid and
Eric Keling to sweep a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader over Lewis. The series was originally scheduled to be played in Romeoville, Ill., but the games were moved to Maryville's Weber Field due to weather conditions in the greater Chicago area.
Â
In game one, the Saints tallied single runs in the third and fourth to take the early lead.
Mike Wilkinson singled in
Brad Ridings with the first score of the game.
Mitch Carriger doubled to lead off the fourth, took third on
Kyle Kinyon's single and scored on a sac fly by Ridings for a 2-0 Saints lead. Lewis struck for three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Saints tied it in the top of the seventh.
Garrett Jones singled with one out and swiped second to move into scoring position. He later scored on
Sean Murphy's RBI single to forge a 3-3 tie to set up ninth inning dramatics.
Kaleb Depew worked a walk to start the frame, and Jones singled. With two outs,
Corey Gall smashed a double to chase home Depew with the eventual game-winning run. Omlid set down the Flyers in order in the ninth to pick up the complete-game victory.
Â
Game two was a pitcher's duel through six innings as Keling and Lewis' Kendall Paluch both put up zeros in the scoring column. The Saints only had four hits in the first six innings, while Lewis managed five. However, the Saints erupted for six runs in the top of the seventh for the decisive outburst. Jones, who came on as a pinch hitter, tripled and scored on Gall's sac fly. With two outs, the Saints had eight straight batters reach.
Nate Steffler singled and Ridings doubled him in. After Depew was hit by a pitch, four of the next five Maryville hitters drew a walk as the Saints stretched out their advantage to 6-0. The Flyers spoiled Keling's shutout bid with a single tally in the seventh but the right-hander posted his second straight complete game to notch the win.
Â
Maryville improves to 6-8 overall, 4-2 in the GLVC. The Flyers drop to 8-9 overall, 2-3 in the conference. The teams will play another doubleheader Sunday at Weber Field with first pitch slated for Noon.
