Three-Run Seventh Inning Boosts Saints Past McKendree 4-1

Box Score Lebanon, Ill. - Sean Murphy's double got the Maryville baseball team on the scoreboard, and Kyle Kinyon's bases loaded walk proved to be key as the Saints rallied for a 4-1 win at McKendree on a cold and windy afternoon in Lebanon, Ill.

The Bearcats scored the game's first run in the bottom of the third as both offenses struggled to generate any hits. The Saints had chances early and stranded nine runners through the first six innings. Maryville finally broke through and pushed three runs across the board in the top of the seventh. Troy Payton and Mitch Carriger worked consecutive walks, and Murphy singled to right center to tie the game. After Corey Gall was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Kinyon walked to force in the go-ahead run. Pinch hitter Mike Wilkinson was plunked by a pitch to plate another run for a 3-1 Saints lead. In the eighth inning, Payton doubled down the line in left, and with two outs, Murphy doubled to right to bring in an insurance run.

Robbie Gordon went the distance to pick up the win for the Saints. The lone run he allowed was unearned while also recording 10 strikeouts. Murphy had two hits, drove in two and scored a run. Carriger drew three walks on the day as the Saints improved to 7-10 on the season. McKendree is now 5-10.

The Saints are back in action Wednesday, as they make the trip to face Division I squad SIU Edwardsville.
