Box Score 2 St. Louis - Fueled by complete games by both starting pitchers
Brandon Sarkissian and
Eric Keling, the Maryville baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader against William Jewell Sunday afternoon at Weber Field. The Saints won game one 2-1 and completed the sweep of the day with a 4-2 triumph in game two.
Â
The Saints manufactured their first run in their first at bat.
Kaleb Depew was hit by a pitch to open the frame, and
Troy Payton put down a sac bunt to move him to second.
Corey Gall then laced a single to left for the early 1-0 edge. In the fourth, the Saints repeated the recipe for another run. This time Payton reached on a single, and
Mike Wilkinson laid down the sacrifice to push Payton into scoring position.
Kyle Uhrich delivered a sharply hit single back up the middle for a 2-0 lead for the eventual game winner.
Â
Sarkissian kept the Cardinals' offense in check until WJC loaded the bases in the sixth inning with no outs. He fanned a hitter, and then the Saints defense turned a double play as Gall scooped up a shot to third, tagged the base and fired the ball to first for the inning-ending defensive play. The Cardinals spoiled Sarkissian's bid for a shutout when they pushed across a run in the top of the seventh, but Sarkissian recorded a strikeout to end the game. He allowed just six hits and posted seven strikeouts en route to the complete game.
Â
Neither team generated much offense early in the second game until the Cardinals tallied a run in the top of the fourth. The Saints were held in check by WJC's Billy Kirkpatrick but broke through in the bottom of the sixth. Payton singled to begin the inning, and Wilkinson followed with another base hit as Payton dashed to third. Gall hit a sac fly to center to tie the game 1-1.
Sean Murphy singled sharply to right field, and Wilkinson ran to third. Murphy tried to advance to second on the play but the Cardinals threw the ball into centerfield allowing Wilkinson to score to put the Saints ahead 2-1. Keling kept the visitors off the scoreboard until the Maryville offense provided him a cushion.
Â
In the eighth, the Wilkinson had a single to start the inning, and
Andrew Naegeli came on as a pinch runner. The Saints were willing to give up an out to get a runner into scoring position but the Cardinals committed an error to put two aboard.
Garrett Jones entered the game as a pinch hitter, and again, the Saints tried to put on the sac bunt. However, the Cardinals committed another error to load the bases. Murphy then smashed a double to left center for a 4-1 lead. WJC got one run back in the top of the ninth on a triple but Keling picked up a grounder back to the mound for the final out of the game.
Â
The Saints improve to 11-11 overall, 7-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Cardinals slide to 7-15 overall, 5-7 in the league. Maryville makes the short trip to north St. Louis Tuesday to take on the University of Missouri-St. Louis for a doubleheader starting at Noon.
