Box Score 2 St. Louis - The Maryville baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Sunday as Truman State won the series with 8-7 and 13-3 wins. The Saints slip to 14-18 overall, 10-12 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Maryville is back in action Wednesday, April 16, when it hosts the University of Missouri-St. Louis for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
Truman State jumped out of the gate with five runs in the first two innings. The Saints cut into the deficit when
Corey Gall and Tyler Omild both recorded RBIs to pull the Saints to 5-2. In the bottom of the fifth, Maryville tied it when
Eric Keling plated a run, and
Sean Murphy's triple drove in two runs. The Bulldogs answered with an RBI single in the sixth and then tacked on two more runs for an 8-5 lead. The Saints loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, and got a run back when
Garrett Jones lifted a sac fly.
Kaleb Depew lashed an RBI single as the Saints cut the lead down to 8-7. However, Maryville was unable to bring in the tying run in the sixth or seventh as TSU held on for the win.
In the second game, the Bulldogs took advantage of a Saints error and had a two-run single lead to a 3-0 run. TSU added two more runs later in the third for a 5-0 advantage. The Saints finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth when
Troy Payton laced an RBI single. Maryville's defense surrendered two more runs on an error as the Bulldogs built a 7-1 lead in the sixth. Down 8-1,
Nate Steffler had an RBI single, and
Nick Stading drove in another run as the Saints closed to 8-3. However, Truman State added insurance runs and held on to improve to 16-18 overall, 11-11 in the GLVC.
