Box Score 2 St. Louis - Crosstown rival University of Missouri-St. Louis made the trip to West County for a crucial Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader and edged the Saints 1-0 and 6-2. The game one loss spoiled a splendid pitching performance by
Brandon Sarkissian who notched a season-high 11 strikeouts and gave up just six hits.
In game one, Joe Wieczkowski had an RBI single in the top of the second for what would prove to be the lone run of the game. Maryville loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth but was unable to push across a run.
Mike Wilkinson began the seventh with a double, and
Andrew Naegeli entered as a pinch runner. He moved up to third on an error as the Saints put runners on the corners. Naegeli took off for home on a
Brad Ridings ball hit to short but was tagged out.
Kaleb Depew walked to load the bases with one out. However, UMSL's Kyle Dermody recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the Saints' threat and the game.
The Tritons grabbed an early lead in game two with a run in the first inning on a sac fly for the 1-0 margin. The visitors doubled their advantage with a single tally in the fourth inning. UMSL tacked on two more runs in the top of the sixth as the Saints were still looking to get their offense untracked. Maryville finally broke through with two runs in the home half of the sixth.
Sean Murphy and Wilkinson both singled to start the inning, and
Eric Keling drew a walk to load the bases.
Corey Gall lifted a sac fly to center to bring Murphy home with the first Maryville run of the day. Wilkinson came around and scored on a passed ball as the Saints cut the deficit to 4-2. However, the Tritons (16-16 overall, 14-10 GLVC) answered with two more runs in the top of the seventh and held off the Saints to win both ends of the doubleheader.
The Saints are now 14-20 overall, 10-14 in the league and begin a four-game series at Quincy Friday, April 18.
