Saints and Quincy Both Record Shutouts As Teams Split DH

Quincy, Ill. - Leftfielder Mitch Carriger threw out the potential game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh to end the game to preserve a 1-0 victory for Maryville in game two at Quincy. The Hawks limited the Saints to just four hits to take the opener 3-0.

In game one, Quincy scored an unearned run for the only score it would need in the contest and tacked on another run with an RBI single. The Hawks added an insurance run in the sixth with a solo homer. The Saints did not get their first base runner until Mike Wilkinson singled in the fourth. Maryville's best scoring opportunity was in the seventh when Tyler Omlid singled and reached third on a QU fielding error. However, the Saints were unable to bring Omlid home as the Hawks kept the Saints off the board.

Omlid was the starter in game two and blanked the Hawks by scattering eight hits en going the distance. The Saints tallied the only run of the game in the fourth. Corey Gall reached on a fielder's choice and moved into scoring position on a groundout. Nate Steffler had the RBI single as the Saints took the 1-0 lead. Foreshadowing what was to come, the Hawks had runners at first and second in the bottom of the fourth. Quincy had a single to left but Carriger nailed Matt Marek at the plate to keep the Saints' one-run lead safe. Omlid held the 1-0 edge as the game moved to the seventh. Peter Cunningham singled and moved into scoring position on a Saints error. Gordon Gundaker lifted a single to left but Carriger ended the game by throwing Cunningham out as catcher Ryna March applied the tag at home.

The Saints stand at 15-21 overall, 11-15 in the league, while the Hawks are now 16-21 overall, 12-13 in the GLVC. The teams will play another doubleheader Saturday starting at Noon.
