Box Score 2 Quincy, Ill. - The Maryville baseball team was narrowly defeated in both ends of a doubleheader Saturday as home squad Quincy escaped with 5-3 and 3-2 decisions over the Saints.
The Hawks took a 1-0 in the bottom of the second but the Saints answered with a run in the top of the third. Eric Keling was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Maryville stretched its lead to 3-1 as it pushed across two runs in the top of the fifth. Garrett Jones singled and stole second base. Corey Gall singled to plate Jones, and Gall took second as the Hawks tried to throw out Jones at the plate. The play was important as Gall scored on Sean Murphy's double. However, Quincy rallied with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, keyed by a three-run homer by Zach Knese.
Quincy scored two runs in its first at bat of game two.
The Saints got on the scoreboard in the sixth as Kyle Uhrich doubled with two outs. After Murphy was hit by a pitch, Tyler Omlid singled to center as Uhrich touched home with the Saints first run of the game. The Hawks rebuilt a 3-1 run with a single tally in the eighth. The Saints tried to rally in the top of the ninth. Jones doubled to open the frame and stole third base. Mike Wilkinson had an RBI grounder as Maryville pulled to within 3-2. However, the Saints were unable to push the game-tying run into scoring position.
The Saints slip to 15-22 overall, 11-17 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while the Hawks up their slate to 18-21, 14-13 in the league. Maryville plays at Harris-Stowe Tuesday, April 22, in a 2 p.m. clash.
