Kansas City, Mo. - In a pair of games featuring wild swings of momentum, Maryville and Rockhurst split a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Kansas City, Mo., Saturday afternoon. The Hawks rallied for an 8-7 in game one, while the Saints rallied late for a 5-4 win in the second contest.

In the first inning, the Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Garrett Jones and Sean Murphy had consecutive singles before Corey Gall singled for the first run of the contest. Mike Wilkinson launched a double to left to plate Murphy and Gall for the three-run cushion. The Hawks came right back to two runs in the home half of the first to trim the deficit to one. With the bases loaded in the fourth, Brad Ridings lofted a sac fly to center to chase home Wilkinson for a 4-2 lead. Kyle Kinyon walked and eventually reached third base. Troy Payton sharply singled to right to score Kinyon as Maryville went up 5-2. Rockhurst put up a single tally in the sixth, then had a bases-loaded single to tie the game 5-5 in the seventh to set up a wild ninth inning.

Kaleb Depew doubled and scored on Payton's single to center field. After Murphy was hit by a pitch, he and Payton pulled off a double steal. Gall walked to load the bases, and Mitch Carriger, who entered the game as a pinch hitter, drew another walk to force in a run for a 7-5 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Rockhurst tied the game on a long sac fly, and an RBI single. With one out and runners at first and second, the Hawks sent both runners for stolen bases but the throw was wild and allowed the game winner to score for the 8-7 comeback win.

Rockhurst was the team to take the early cushion in game two with a single tally in the third and two more in the fourth. The Saints erupted with five runs in the sixth to surge ahead. Kepew started the inning with a double, and Carriger worked a walk. Gall doubled as the Saints hung their first run of the inning on the board. Wilkinson doubled down the line in left for another run, and Murphy singled to bring in the third run of the frame. With Wilkinson on third and Gall on second, the Hawks committed an error as both runners sprinted home for a 5-3 lead. Rockhurst got one run back in the sixth inning, and singled with one out in the seventh to get the tying run aboard. However, Saints pitcher Eric Keling picked off the runner at first, and he notched a strikeout to end the game as Maryville held the Hawks off in the finale. Keling went the route for his fourth straight complete game.

The Saints are now 13-13 overall, 9-7 in the GLVC, and the Hawks see their slate move to 9-17, 8-8 in the conference. The teams finish the series with a doubleheader Sunday.
