Box Score 2 Kansas City, Mo. - The Maryville baseball team lost both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Rockhurst Sunday. The Hawks rallied to take game one 6-5 and used a big fourth inning to take game two 7-3.
Rockhurst scored three runs in the bottom of the second and added a single tally in the third before the Saints offense took off in the fourth. With two outs, Mike Wilkinson started the outburst with a single and took third on Kyle Kinyon's single. A Rockhurst fielding error allowed both runners to score as the Saints the their deficit in half. Another Hawks' miscue put two runners aboard, and Kaleb Depew chased them both home to force a 4-4 tie. Sean Murphy's RBI single brought Depew home as the Saints took their first lead at 5-4.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Rockhurst tied the game on a wild pitch as the game moved on. The Saints nearly took the lead in the top of the ninth but stranded the bases full. In the bottom of the ninth, the script was flipped as the Hawks loaded the bases but Stu Jeck singled to bring home the game-winning run.
Garrett Jones doubled with one out in the top of the first inning in game two, and he scored on Murphy's RBI single through the right side of the Rockhurst defense. The Hawks answered by tying the game in the bottom of the first and added another single tally in the third inning. However, Rockhurst broke the game open with five runs in the fourth on six hits for a 7-1 margin. Depew singled, moved to second after a Jones walk and eventually reached third. Corey Gall put a ball into play but the Hawks booted the ball as Depew dashed home with Maryville's second run. Pinch hitter Brad Ridings doubled in the top of the seventh and eventually scored on Murphy's RBI single back up the middle but the Saints comeback ended with two runners in scoring position.
The Saints slide to 13-15 overall, 9-9 in the GLVC. The Hawks up their mark to 11-17 overall, 10-8 in the conference.
