Saints Drop DH to No. 27 Drury; Gall Plays All Nine Positions

Senior Corey Gall played all nine positions in game two vs Drury
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 St. Louis - In the regular-season finale, the Maryville baseball squad dropped both ends of a doubleheader to No. 27 Drury as the Saints recognized nine seniors making their final appearances in a Maryville uniform on Senior Day. The Panthers won by scores of 11-0 and 7-1. In the second game, Saints senior Corey Gall played all nine defensive positions, believed to be the first time that has been done at Maryville.

In the opener, the Panthers struck quickly as they sent 10 batters to the plate en route to scoring six runs. Payton Reed and Tyler Arthur each had two-run doubles for all the offense DU starter Kevin Sweeney would need. The Saints were limited to just five hits. Maryville's best scoring chance came in the seventh when Tyler Omlid and Gall had back-to-back singles. The duo moved up a base on a wild pitch but both were stranded in scoring position as the game ended.

In game two, the Panthers pushed across one run in each of the first three innings. The Saints got a run back in the fifth. Mike Wilkinson singled, took second when Brad Ridings reached on a fielder's choice, and both runners moved up a base on a Panthers' throwing error. Wilkinson then scored on a wild pitch as the Saints closed the gap to 3-1. The Panthers sealed the win in the top of the seven when they strung together five hits and tallied four runs. Drury improved to 37-11 overall, 28-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and won the West Division.

Gall, who started game two at first base, played all the infield positions, then rotated through the outfield slots. In the eighth, Gall moved behind the plate and perfectly framed a pitch to earn a called strike three. He took over on the mound for the Saints and, after walking a batter, induced a double play. Gall recorded a strikeout to end the top of the ninth.

The Saints finished the 2014 season with a 19-30 overall record, 14-22 in the GLVC.
